A Riddle – What Gets Clients at Hello?
A riddle for you: what gets clients at hello?
It certainly isn’t a boring “elevator pitch”!
It’s something you can learn from pick up artists. Seriously! This may be a weird question, but have you ever watched pick up artists do their stuff?
Don’t laugh. And don’t get offended (yet). ;)
And before your mind goes off wandering in places where it needn’t, realize that these guys have mastered one skill every business owner needs.
Business owners must master the art of getting attention and starting a conversation!
By the way, you should be learning marketing from different places and going outside your industry to pick up fresh strategies – hence me learning from pick-up artists!
But I digress…
Back when I was zooming around town and attending networking meetings to get clients there were two things I hated the most about the whole process.
1) walking into a room full of strangers and 2) having to answer the dreaded “what do you do” question.
I devised an entire system to solve problem #1.
The gist of it is that I basically got myself invited to these groups and when I arrived I was expected and immediately introduced to the “clique” – you know, the group within the group – usually all the movers and shakers.
I share this system in my Networking Secrets program.
I also created a formula for what I call an Audio Business Card that I used to solve problem #2.
Let me teach you how to do it.
There are three core parts that make up your ABC.
TM + BP + HUB = Instant Attraction
TM is your Target Market. This is where you talk about your ideal clients.
BP is their Big Pain. You could also talk about their Big Dream – I will show you how in a moment.
Finally, HUB is Hot Undeniable Benefit of doing business with you. Sort of like your Unique Selling Proposition. But I like HUB better (mainly because I came up with it.)
Now, the formula is simple, but it’s the delivery that’s the key.
The trick is to not rush. Ditch everything you’ve ever learned about the stupid 7-second elevator pitch. Take your time!
And only talk to people who are actually paying attention to you and follow along. If someone is too busy looking for their “next mark”, don’t tell them what you do.
This is probably the weirdest business and networking advice you’ve ever heard, right? But think about it – why waste your breath on someone who’s ignoring you?
Again, I explain this in detail in the Networking Secrets.
Let’s assume you’re talking to someone who is totally attentive. Here’s how the ABC formula would work.
They: “What do you do?”
You: “You know how many people start and run their own coaching and consulting businesses nowadays?” (pause)
They: nodding in agreement
You: Since you’ve got their attention, dig a little deeper. You know how they are passionate about what they do, but they just can’t figure out how to turn it into a real business?” (pause and wait if they are still with you)
They: nodding in agreement again
You: They are great at what they do, but they just don’t have the business and marketing know how. So they end up working way too hard, with too few clients, for too little money. Do you know what I mean? Maybe you even know people like this, right?(pause and wait)
They: nodding in agreement. “OMG, this sounds so familiar. This room is filled with people like this”
You: “Well, so what I do is I show them a seven step process that will get them all the new clients they want – guaranteed!” (pause and wait for response)
Note: Can you find the three parts – TM, BP, and HUB?
At this point they will likely ask you “how do you do this?”
And this is where most people completely screw it up, but that’s a new skill – actually keeping the attention you got!
I might cover this in a future message. If you want to learn it right now, just get access to my Networking Secrets.
