Why I P.E.T. My Prospects To Stand Out And Get New Clients (and Why YOU Should Do The Same!))
Back in late 1990’s I used to drive a lot…
I co-owned a growing chain of coffee / bagel shops and on some days, to visit several of them, I would drive 150-200 miles – and that’s in LA area traffic. (A real nightmare!)
Most of the time, I listened to books on tapes a lot (which later became books on CDs… and today it’s just Audible, but I digress…)
However, sometimes I just needed a break so I would turn on the radio.
There was one show that always got me revved up.
The host always had a controversial spin on interesting topics. And he nearly always managed to piss me off.
Have you ever yelled at a radio or TV show host even though you knew they can’t hear you?
Well, I yelled at that guy a lot!
In fact, I even called to talk to him on the air once.
Yep! It’s the only time I did it. As far as I remember we got really into it and he hung up on me (as he did on most of the callers) after about 48 seconds.
But here’s the funny thing.
No matter how mad I got, every time I reached for the dial I just couldn’t bring myself to change the station!
Because he was P.E.T.-ting me!
WHAT? Let me explain…
Here’s a 3-Step Formula How To “Rub People The Wrong Way” To Stand Out And Win More Clients:
1. Polarize.
Make people love you or hate you. If you’re just blah nobody will care if you’re gone!
2. Entertain.
People are bored out of their minds. And stressed out! They want a break from their daily rut. Give it to them – make them smile.
3. Teach.
You’ve got to be useful, or when they’re crunched for time they will ditch you.
The best one sentence example of PET I ever heard was from Gary Vaynerchuk. (Like him or not, you can’t argue with his success.)
He said… “Give people good shit!”
The curse word polarizes people. When he says it, it’s funny as heck. And it’s dang good advice! Perfect PET!Â
So, what’s the lesson for you?
Don’t be boring! PET your peeps! You’ll get more biz!
Don’t be boring! PET your peeps! You’ll get more biz!
How can you use this in your business? Do you have it in you to kick up a bit of a dust storm from time to time?
