Why I Haven’t Had a Business Card in 8 Years

It shocks people, but it’s true…

I have a coaching and consulting business that’s generating millions of dollars in sales and I don’t have a business card.

Haven’t had one since 2006.

I’ll tell you why in a moment. Even more importantly, I’ll tell you what I do (and what you should do) instead.

But first, here’s a story what happened that made me stop printing and carrying business cards.

Back in 2006 I attended a big business expo with hundreds of vendors and thousands of attendees.

I had just more than doubled my business in the past year and I was on track to do it again.

So I was in a spending mood looking for specific services.

After I trekked through the isles for a while, elbowing through a crowd of freebie-hungry, brochure-grabbing, goodie-bag-stuffing professional expo goers…

I zeroed in on six vendors that offered what I wanted. 

I spent good ten minutes with each of them, making sure they knew I was a buyer with money already earmarked for the kind of service they were providing.

Each took my business card, scribbled notes about me and my needs on the back of it, and promised to get back to me the next day.

Well… days turned into weeks… 

Guess how many of those six vendors got back to me to “collect their cash” – meaning make an easy sale?

NONE! And this taught me an important lesson.

If most people won’t follow up to get money from me, very few – if any -  will ever follow up to give me their money!

That’s why I stopped printing and giving out business cards.

Instead, I set up my entire business to ALWAYS BE COLLECTING people’s contact info!

You should be doing the same.

Stop handing out business cards and Always Be Collecting people’s contact info.

 

If you want to be in business (successfully) for a long time, make it your job to collect contact info from potential clients so you can keep in touch beyond the initial connection.
